Popeye
Popeye Comic Book Collectors
Popeye has been around since I was a kid, actually before that. The first time I saw Popeye and his anchor tattoo, corncob pipe and heard his voice, I was hooked for life! Popeye the Sailor cartoons and comic books have been my favorites ever since. My
father used to read me Popeye comic strips while smoking his cigar... just to give a little more realism to enjoying the comic book. OK, so the big question, did Popeye have ANY friends? Of course not... the fights between Popeye and his bearded
enemy Bluto were the most realistic and scary (to a five year old kid) of any cartoon character. Sure it's the same old story almost every time... Bluto puts the make on Popeye's "sweetie", Olive Oyl and that leads to the big show down...
Was Popeye and Super Hero? You've got to be kidding, if Popeye was super hero, than I'm the Hulk. Forget it, his strange shaped body would never make it... also, he was always cursing and whispering just under his breath, so you couldn't really
hear what he had to say. Now that I'm older, I enjoy his mumbled curses and comments as much as the fights between Popeye and Bluto. And let's not forget the Jeep, the coolest comic character never to receive recognition. Popeye and other cartoons
also played a role in cheering up people during times of war... who ever dreamed up Popeye fights Bluto to the music of "The Stars and Stripes Forever" was a genius or so crazy they must be "loony tunes"!
